About the Book
Photography is by function voyeuristic, but Josh's photos go beyond recording a moment or a common beauty, to the act of distantly bearing witness.
Time is central to Josh's work. His attention to light, narrative, and tone depict moments that will not repeat and are over as soon as the camera lowers. Even a photo of a dead bird is in an active state of noticeable decomposition.
None of the subjects are formal or composed, thus self-consciousness and artifice on the part of the subject are absent. Because of this, there's a longing and removal in Josh's work that expresses separation and otherness. A desire to be part of, and to achieve stability, safety, and assurance are conveyed.
Josh's work is preoccupied with the byproducts of living, the moments before and after a main event, the moments that are automatic, and the evidence of subconsciousness and time.
