About the Book
Cómics que Curan: Volume 2 is the culmination of a 10-week series of comic book writing and illustration workshops conducted by DSTL Arts, a nonprofit arts mentorship organization that inspires, teaches and hires emerging artists from underserved communities. This workshop series originally began as a series offered at the Los Angeles Public Library–Benjamin Franklin Branch in the community of Boyle Heights, a follow-up series to the successful one that originated Cómics que Curan: Volume 1. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this series transitioned to digital platforms.
The COVID-19 era of closures to public spaces, and the radical shift to social distancing in all areas of life, undoubtedly affected the mental wellness of all communities, and this is reflected, in part, by the work presented in Cómics que Curan: Volume 2.
It is the hope that this anthology of comics encourages our community to have meaningful conversations relating to mental wellness, emotional health, and more. It is the hope that this anthology empowers others who might share in the kinds of emotions our artists portrayed through their comics, and helps those individuals feel less alone. It is the hope that these comics support, as well as heal, through new mental health conversations we will surely have in our community.
