About the Book
The Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage site and rightly so. This kind of landscape of shallow mudflats and wetlands exists almost nowhere else in the world. Sometimes at the endless emptiness the horizon seems rubbed out by a silver-grey layer of clouds. Then a thin layer of water draws a sharp line between water and sky, making you feel like walking on water. The repetitive endlessness of the flats is almost hypnotic.
On the other side of the isles it seems like there’s no end to the dunes. The horizon is hidden behind the waving marram grass, but then the beach and North Sea finally come into view.
The Wadden islands of Schiermonnikoog and Ameland are a world in itself. Wide, white sandy beaches, the wind never letting up. The natural beauty of the place draws much attention. Wherever you go, because of the wide open spaces there is a lot of depth and sky surrounding you. Everpresent water reflects the light, also on dull days, so there are no ‘bad light’ days here. It is always a case of double the light.
