位於美國維吉尼亞州的火星雲美術館主要研究、陳列中國元、明和清代繪畫、中國清代廣東油畫和法國巴比松畫派代表人物法蘭西斯科•米勒的作品。《山色: 集大成者—金農、王翬》是該館“藝術與藝術家系列”的第一冊。書名由慎召民先生題寫。系列畫冊中所用的繪畫，多數來自于海外收藏者。中國繪畫，尤其是山水畫，到了清代枯萎凋零；唯有早期的“四王”繼承了宋元風格。人們普遍認為，清初“四王”，即王時敏、王鑑、王原祁和王翬及其門派，是山水畫正宗。而这个结论，遺漏了一些精華畫家，例如金農。金農是“揚州八怪”(揚州畫派)之一。清代方薰(1736-1799)總結道：“國朝畫法，廉州(王鑑)、石谷(王翬)為一宗，奉常祖孫(王時敏、王原祁)為一宗。廉州匠心渲染，格無不備”。方薰未提及金農，即使現代的教課書也少有書寫金農的山水。人們普遍認為，金農五十歲始作畫，此系誤傳。本冊僅以金農、王翬的佳作奉獻給讀者，以展示清代畫家傳承的宋元風采，並在最後，插入四王追隨者溥儒青年時期的山水三幅。

The art gallery operated by Marscloud, Inc. at 9108 Church Street, Manassas, Virginia 20110 studies and exhibits traditional Chinese paintings from the Yuan (1271–1368), Ming (1368–1644), and Qing (1644–1911) eras, 19th-century China Trade oil paintings, as well as works by Jean-François Millet (1814–75) of the Barbizon school. This book is the first volume of the gallery’s Art and Artists Series. The title of the book is credited to the thoughtfulness of Mr. Shen Zhaomin. Most of the artworks discussed in the book belong to private collections outside of China.

The Chinese landscape, or “mountain-and-river” (shan shui), genre of painting had declined by the Qing era. Yet there were still artworks of exception, including those of Jin Nong and Wang Hui, who will be shown in this book. Works by the late-Qing artist Puru will also be introduced. Their works may be considered heirs to the “mountain-and-river” legacy that ultimately traces back to the Song period (960–1279), when the genre reached its zenith.
