Mabel Lockhart: An Educational Pioneer, her Experiences at Silver Fox School, Amber Valley, Athabaska, Alberta, 1921 recounts the story of a young, untrained teacher who finds herself being asked to teach a class of 24 children in the pioneer community of Amber Valley, Alberta. All of the children were newly arrived in Canada—half from Poland and Ukraine, and half from Oklahoma, USA. In addition to the challenges of language and acculturation which the European children faced was the challenge of racial integration, as the children from Oklahoma were African American. The school had not been able to keep a teacher for any length of time due to perceived discrimination by the previous teachers. Despite having no training in cross-cultural communication, Mabel used creative techniques and ingenuity to face the challenges, insisting that everyone was treated with absolute fairness. In a short time Mabel turned the situation around and all the children stayed in school, completing their classes that summer. Fifty years later the children remembered her with fondness and respect.
