In 1936, at the age of 21, Michele Ferraro was a soldier in Benito Mussolini’s army, the era of fascism in Italy. In 1941, following the defeat of Italy in East Africa by the allies of World War II, he became a prisoner of war in Southern Rhodesia (today Zimbabwe) and South Africa until 1946.
