About the Book
In the autumn of 2022, UC Berkeley brought backhoes, chainsaws, and earthmovers to People’s Park, intending to clear the vegetation and last unhoused people from its land and make way for a new dormitory. Protesters shut the operation down, as they first did in 1968, and the park has been in political, legal, and physical limbo ever since. I made these photographs and words to document what may be the last days of this important site of social experimentation, and to make clear why we need it.
