About the Book
"Post Urban Japan WS24" showcases the outcome of the RISD travel course that took place in Japan in January 2024. The students visited various places from major metropolitan cities to small islands and rural communities in Japan in 19 days, including Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Uno, Teshima, Naoshima, Nakanojo, Maebashi, Ota, Kiryu, Kanagawa, and Tokyo. While visiting these places, students developed their answers to the course's overarching question, "What if Tokyo becomes a forest?" considering the ongoing issues of depopulation and aging society in the country. How might the way people live change? How might, or should, the relationship between Tokyo and regional cities change?
