About the Book
Step onto the bustling streets, where scooters weave like shoals of fish, and vendors peddle their wares with a smile. Here, the air carries the aroma of stinky tofu and the sweet notes of bubble tea. Each alleyway whispers stories—the worn stone steps leading to hidden temples, the laundry fluttering from bamboo poles, and the neon signs casting their glow on rain-slicked pavements.
In these streets, time dances, a tai chi master practicing at dawn, a child chasing bubbles, an elderly couple sharing a bench. The city’s heartbeat is in the footsteps of commuters, the clatter of chopsticks against bowls, and the laughter of friends gathered around a street-side stall.
Taipei wears its traditions proudly. Temples stand sentinel, their incense spiralling toward the heavens. Dragon boat races echo ancient legends, and lantern festivals illuminate the night. Calligraphy strokes grace red paper, and tea ceremonies invite us to slow down, savouring each fragrant cup.
Yet, Taipei is also a canvas for innovation. Skyscrapers pierce the sky, their glass facades reflecting centuries-old banyan trees. Night markets buzz with energy, where food stalls serve up xiaolongbao and oyster omelettes alongside bubble milk tea. Here, tradition and progress waltz together.
The people of Taipei, oh, how they embody kindness! A stranger offers directions with a warm smile, a grandmother shares her umbrella during a sudden downpour, and the fruit vendor insists you taste the juiciest mango. Politeness is woven into the fabric of daily life, bowing, saying “XièXiè” (thank you), and holding doors open.
As you view these photographs, know that behind each candid moment lies a story of connection.
