About the Book
Paris has been known as the City of Light since the turn of the 20th century saw the adoption of widespread gas lighting fixtures to illuminate its streets. But, as I traversed the neighborhoods (“les arrondissements”), I also crisscrossed its five “zones” of public transit that connect the urban core to the suburbs (“les banlieues”). I felt I was always in Paris-ish, as I partook in the transport process through the young year of 2024, whereby Paris’ modernity as a city of mobilities became especially apparent. Passing from one zone to another, the passenger on the so-called “Grand-Paris Express” can do little else beyond submitting oneself to the rhythm of life, as the city’s infrastructure connects its people and history.
