    About the Book

    Edit

In March 2012 I was on a ten day vacation to New York City. For a hungry photographer it’s a more-than-you-can-eat-buffet. You can feel and see that everything around you happens incredibly fast and at the same moment. I would need a lot more time to make a book like this on my hometown Graz in Austria.

New York impressed me with its many-sidedness. In a distance as in between two stations of a subway line, cultural, ethnic and social background of the inhabitants can totally differ. Therefore, it’s hard to describe what life generally looks like in this city.

With this book I pursue two different approaches to street-photography. The first catches fleeting moments, urban environment and the light that interests me. The second approach is more still, descriptive and displays more of a person’s identity. Both are equally intuitive, but the second approach makes it possible to talk to strangers first so it becomes more of a portrait. The subtitle of the book "A Street-Photo-Ethnography in 10 Days“ refers to my two different ways of photographing life in a city.

Christopher Mavrič was born in 1985 in Bruck a.d. Mur. He is currently based in Graz working as a freelance photographer. In 2008 he finished his studies in Information- and Communication Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Graz. During his studies he started to work as a photographer for magazines and newspapers, mainly focusing on reportage and portrait photography with a social and cultural interest. From 2009 to 2010 he attended Friedl Kubelka’s School for Photography in Vienna. He likes to travel and has exhibited his street and portrait photography in Austria and Germany. For most of his work he prefers to shoot film and to make prints using alternative processes as lith-printing or liquid emulsions. Since January 2012 he teaches creative darkroom-technique at the Academy for Applied Photography in Graz.
