About the Book
In September of 1987, a group of Beat Generation poets, authors, and performers gathered in Lawrence, Kansas for a week-long literary festival of readings and diverse activities. This book is a collection of 25 never before published photographs that document some of the highlights of this event. The images reveal a moment in time which, seen from the vantage point of 25 years down the road, poignantly evokes a sense of how things have changed. Although many of the performers at this event have died, the legacy they left behind in the form of poems, books, songs, and film are milestones marking the battles on the road to artistic freedom.
