About the Book
With 115 vintage, anonymous, and amateur snapshot images carefully selected from a private collection, "Snapshots of a Century in the West," the unique photographic book history of an extraordinary region, provides a candid look inside a wide array of people, places, and moments that have made the West definitive. By "West" what is meant is the region encompassing a few hundred mile radius of Coachella Valley, California in the southeastern part of the state. The Coachella Valley includes the corridor of desert valley and mountain communities from Banning to Mecca near the Salton Sea with Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta and Indio in the middle.
Representing a broad array of photographs collected from around the world, this Limited Edition is the first volume of a planned series that will be highly appreciated by aficionados of Photography books, Photo-history and Visual History fields, Popular culture, American History, Anthropology and the History of Photography and Technology.
Photographic images from this first volume and others yet to come have never before been seen publicly in print. Much more than a photographic coffee table book, the minimal text, yet carefully crafted in the hands of a published historian, are intended to evoke and provoke reflective thoughts about photographic collections, preservation, and beauty found in unexpected places. With captions, Index of Images, and a set of Recommended Readings which the author found particularly meaningful, this book offers a great value.
A wonderful gift idea!
But more than just a coffee-table book, "Snapshots of a Century in the West" will illuminate the vast cultural, societal and environmental changes that we have experienced in 100 years of snapping pictures. As much as life has changed, however, there is great universality of themes and experiences in every life, no matter the decades lived.
Suddenly you will find snapshot images that keep you awake, not just for their raw beauty but because of the longing for a time and place that's just beyond reach -- or is it?
