    About the Book

    Edit

Lost, Face explores how I transform from a passive state, to an active state. These ideas of objectivity where accidental forces that are out of my control, can impact on my knowledge and experience; the photographs meaning. The quality of this knowledge can change drastically, so when photographing or editing these particular photos, it can create a whole new reality. According to German philosopher Thomas Metzinger, no such things as “selves” exist in our world. He talks about how nobody ever had or was a self, and all that exists are phenomenal selves, as they appear in conscious experience. The phenomenal self, however, is not a thing but an on going process; it is the content of a “transparent self-model.” When photographing, it is most useful to do so through this transparent self-model state of awareness – but our subjectivity will still prevail, I believe so. I cannot control this, even when I am aware of its occurrence.

I travelled to another land, unknown to me. This land was called Thailand. Seeing the way how some Thai people had to live, just to survive changed the way I saw, forever. It made me want to become a better person and be thankful for what I have, the opportunity’s that exist within it, and be grateful to know how lucky I am. The changes that were needed to better myself were not truly realised until re-looking at the photographs that were taken after returning home to Australia - and this made me treat them in a very particular way, in accordance to how this experience and realisation had affected me.
