About the Book
INVERTO is a series of black and white photographs documenting an individual’s physical transition from female to male over a period of two years. Captured at regular intervals, the images demonstrate the impact of hormone therapy (testosterone) and gender reassignment surgery (double mastectomy, aka ‘top surgery’)
In late 2010, artist Alison Bennett was approach by a friend who had taken the momentous decision to undergo gender reassignment: to physically transition from female to male. In addition, the individual planned to have a baby before beginning hormone therapy. Over the course of two years, they met on a monthly basis and photographed the same pose under the same lighting conditions. The result is a remarkable collection of images revealing an insight into an experience that is little understood outside of those directly touched by these circumstances.
‘Inverto’ is Latin for transform/transfer/transpose, and curiously, ‘invert’ is an old term for homosexual that carries transgender implications. WWW.INVERTO.ME
