Thomas Handforth was a Guggenheim Fellow who lived in Peking, China in the 30s.
This book brings drawings, prints, and photographs of circus like scene in his
courtyard where strolling musicians, acrobats, wrestlers and wise men posed
For his drawings. After six years the work came together in a children's book Mei Li
which was awarded the 2nd Caldecott Medal in 1939.
