August 2002. When I arrived at the remote, isolated Italian farmhouse I carried with me rolls of black and white 120 mm film. I kept them cool in a grotto. By the time Sam and I departed twelve and a half years later things were not the same. Not only had film been replaced by pixels, the post-war world we had stepped into had all but vanished. But the most significant change was intangible, it was within us.
