    About the Book

    Edit

Otters have been hunted, persecuted and were nearly exterminated in the British Isles in the last century. Actions put in place to redress the situation a few decades ago have reversed this situation and we now have a great conservation success. It is now thought otters can be found in all of our counties. This has created an upsurge in interest in them, being well publicised by our many wildlife trusts and the nature programmes on television. Even so very few people have ever seen them in the wild because they are not prolific, generally nocturnal, very shy and elusive. For those who have a desire to see these magnificent creatures in the wild then there is probably no better place to go than the Shetland Islands. Shetland is well known for wildlife, especially its large colonies of sea birds and seals, but less so for its otters. It has the highest density of otters in the British Isles and living along the coastline they are easier to locate and observe than those that live along our rivers. Shetland was an irresistible draw for me. The experience exceeded all my expectations because I was able to capture the images displayed in this book of this enthralling creature. I think the otter is mesmerising; you can be the judge. Previewing the book will provide the reader with photographs of this beautiful animal. Please be aware that the electronic versions of the book require a suitable size screen to be able to read the text and captions clearly and obtain a better previewing experience.
