About the Book
Loretta Howard Gallery is pleased to present Richard Anuszkiewicz: Translumina Series 1989-1993, opening February 15th, 6:00 pm-8:00 pm, running through March 17th, 2018. The Translumina Series focuses on the artist’s shaped geometric paintings on wood panels. The Anuszkiewicz paintings shown in this exhibition are sculptural low relief wood constructed paintings of intertwined boxes that induce cerebral illusions of transparency and solid forms. Richard Anuszkiewicz’s conception of the Translumina series was derived from his involvement with three-dimensional works after the creation of the Temple series.
Richard Anuszkiewicz trained at the Cleveland Institute of Art before receiving his masters of Fine Arts from Yale University, where he studied under Josef Albers. Considered one of the founders and major forces of the 1960’s and 70’s Op-Art movement, Anuszkiewicz’s work provokes optical transformations that result from both the primary and high intensity colors he applies to his geometric configurations. Anuszkiewicz’s work focuses on the effects of structure and full intensity color when juxtaposed.
A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition with an essay written by Professor Emeritus at The Sorbonne and Director of the Musée d'Orsay, Serge Lemoine.
