About the Book
This book showcases the work of seven photographers shooting Real de Catorce, a remote village hidden high in the Sierra Madre mountains of central Mexico. The trip was led by Jo Brenzo, a well-known photographer leading photography expeditions throughout Central and South America.
Real de Catorce (‘Royal Fourteen’) is named fo 14 Spanish soldiers killed in an ambush by Chichimeca warriors. It is home to a rich variety of religious traditions and festivals. The Huichol Indians, known for their peyote rituals, believe that the mountain is the birthplace of "Tatewari", the God of Fire. Each spring during Holy week, with Iglesia Purisima Conceptiòn acting as the hub of the festival, Catholics reenact the Passion of Christ. The landscape is starkly lovely. The abandoned silver mines are a photographer's dream. Several images were shot from horseback.
Photographers: Anne Kuesl James, Barry Knapp, David Raum, Ritha Fellerman, Kay McMullen, Marilyn Westlake, Jill Buzzard.
