About the Book
Leaving Norway at a time of great hardship in the 1880s, Engebret and his brothers set off for America, with the hope of a establishing a better life. After two decades of struggling with limited opportunities for growth in Minnesota, when ‘free land’ in Saskatchewan was advertised, Engebret and his family decided to once again risk everything and migrate to a new country, in hopes of obtaining good farm land that they could grow and prosper on. Arriving on the fertile prairies of what was to become the Ardath District, Engebret’s family were among the first European settlers to the area. Facing terrible winters, terrifying summer fires, sickness and even death, the family persevered, and over time came to prosper from the rich farmland that supported them. Told through a great-granddaughter’s eyes, the stories of ‘The Grandfathers’ speak to universal themes of land, loss, survival, identity, and belonging.
