About the Ebook
Despite being a motor racing fanatic, Banger Racing is a genre of motor sport that I had never watched in person, and had never fully understood.
I am not alone as the only motorsport fan with this trend, as Banger Racing is a sport that is greeted with horror and disgust by many motor racing fans and car enthusiasts alike, without fully knowing or understanding the sport in question.
Cars are seen by many as icons of an era, emotive artistic designs, and an achievement or milestone in mans history to build, refine, and pioneer.
Banger Racing seemingly goes against this attitude, cars are bought as cheaply as possible, stripped of anything that isn’t deemed crucial, painted and customized with graffiti, and then sent into a gladiatorial like arena to be crashed and smashed beyond any recognition.
It’s clear to me that the ethos to throw caution to the wind is a breath of fresh air in today’s strict society, but what is unclear is the commitment and sacrifices made to race, only to then destroy their work.
What’s even more compelling is that most participants compete simply for the adrenalin rush, and have no real desire to make money out of racing or to even become a professional racing driver.
The common conceptions are what I want to dig deeper into, to uncover the truth and the underlying factor that draws the competitors back again, and again.
Is it simply motoring barbarity, or a labor of love and commitment - sending vehicles off in a final blaze of smoke and mangled glory?
Through photographing various Banger Racing events I aim to show the answers to these questions.
